A great walking community

The city and borough of Sitka has a new honor with its Walk Friendly Community designation.

The announcement was made earlier this week by Walk Friendly Communities, a national recognition program developed to encourage towns and cities to establish or recommit to safer walking environments.

The WFC program will recognize communities that are working to improve a wide range of conditions related to walking, including safety, mobility, access and comfort.

The award is the on the heels of a 2012 Sitka Health Summit wellness project.

Over 50 miles of trails throughout the community, with another 100 miles planned for construction or reconstruction is available in Sitka.
